Welcome to a confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings and challenges in your life

Welcome and thank you for visiting New Day Counselling

Hi, I'm Mel and I offer integrative counselling in Bath and online. I have experience working with clients coping with losses in life. I work with individual adults on a short-term or long-term basis. My niche is working with eating disorders, body image and disordered relationship with food, but there may be many challenges you may be facing that I can also help with, such as anxiety, depression, past events or relationship breakdowns that can affect you and your wellbeing.

Do you feel like you are at a crossroads at the moment? Maybe your life feels overwhelming or unbalanced? Do you feel you are wearing a mask but internally you feel you need support? If so, counselling may help.

Sometimes, life can bring many challenges and it is understandable that, at times, we might look for ways to restore balance back into our lives. As a counsellor, my role is to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to help you on your journey of self-discovery; to enable you to view your life and make new and positive choices.

I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, coming to me with a diverse range of problems. As a fully qualified counsellor, I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their code of ethics. What is counselling?

Counselling provides you with a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space for you to explore the challenges you are facing and the emotions or behaviours that are troubling you. By expressing your emotions and sharing your thoughts, you are better equipped to make sense of them, so you can take back control and develop ways to cope with your feelings and move forward with your life.

As your counsellor, I will listen with warm empathy and compassion, helping you look deeper and develop your self-awareness. I am not here to fix you. I believe that everyone has the power within themselves to achieve their goals and take back control. I am merely there to offer you a fresh perspective of your struggles, so you can achieve your full potential.

What is Integrative Counselling?

You may have come across this term before but not know what it means. It simply means that as we work together, I will listen to your unique circumstance and challenges and work from a blend of modalities to best suit you that we can use in our sessions to help you understand yourself better. No two clients are the same and no two issues are identical, so by taking an integrative approach, I can tailor our sessions to you, your feelings, behaviours and difficulties.

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”

— Carl R. Rogers

Speak in Confidence

I offer a safe space and a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside your day-to-day life.

A problem shared…

Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes.

Let's work together

I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, coming to me with a diverse range of problems. If you would like to schedule a free 30-minute telephone call, please contact me.

About me

Through my own life experiences, I became a counsellor as I wanted to support and listen to others. I strongly believe recovery is possible; you are the expert of your story and having this time will assist you in overcoming challenges to help restore balance.

I do a variety of work for charities supporting people with eating disorders in the area. I help with a mental health charity, offering telephone support for people struggling with their mental health. I also volunteered with a national bereavement charity, offering support to people who are struggling with their grief and loss.

Qualifications

I am a fully trained, registered, and insured Counsellor, having completed the following qualifications:

  • Level 4 diploma in Counselling Skills – Bath College
  • BACP registered
  • CPD – eating disorders, trauma, grief,
  • Trained Yoga teacher

As an integrative counsellor, I am committed to developing my practice so I am regularly engaged in career development and training so I can offer my clients the best service possible.

Initial assessment

Before we can begin working together, we will have a free, confidential 30 minute telephone call. This gives us the opportunity to talk about the issues you are struggling with. Through this call, it is an opportunity for you to let me know what is going on for you. I try to find out as much as I can about your situation, your background and the challenges you are facing to see how I can best help you and if I’m the right counsellor for you.

This is also an opportunity for you to find out as much as you can about counselling, the process and working with me. You are under no obligation for us to work together unless you feel confident and comfortable working with me.

My approaches

As a integrative counsellor, I am focused on helping you explore your struggles and find your own answers from within. You are in control of our sessions; we will explore the experiences and issues that you want to explore, going at a pace that you feel comfortable with.

I use a blended approach, drawing on approaches such as Person centred CBT, transactional analysis and psychodynamics to help you probe deeper and move through your journey of self-discovery towards achieving your goals. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes.

Sessions

Sessions usually take place on a weekly or two weekly basis, and we will regularly review the sessions together so we can assess the impact and the progress you have made.

We will take the time to build a working relationship based on trust and respect, so you feel comfortable expressing your emotions and exploring your feelings. From this foundation, I can help you better understand your struggles and unlock your potential.

In Person or Online

I can work with you in person, online or via telephone if you prefer. Since lockdown, online counselling has become a popular way for people to access counselling as it offers them more flexibility of time and the added bonus of being able to engage in sessions from the comfort of their own home without having to worry about travel arrangements.

I also offer walk and talk outdoor counselling in Bath and surrounding areas. This is a great option if you enjoy connecting with the outdoors and you are comfortable talking and walking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have counselling online?

Online counselling is a way for you to engage in counselling using internet technology; I use Zoom and hold an online certificate. Zoom is a way for you to engage face to face from your computer whilst engaging in counselling. Should you choose Zoom counselling, you will be guided through setting up your own encrypted Zoom account and we will meet on Zoom at a time that you have previously arranged. In some individual cases, if you wish you can choose to only work with audio through Zoom and no video camera would then be needed.

Not all types of issues can be resolved through online counselling, and I will advise you if I feel that online or telephone counselling would not be the most suitable means of support. I will endeavour to assist you in a referral to a suitable alternative source of support in the area you live in.

Is counselling confidential?

Rest assured, everything you discuss with me is confidential. I will need to discuss my work with my supervisor however your identity will be protected, and no distinguishing details will be disclosed. I am obliged to break confidentiality if you were to disclose involvement in or knowledge of an act of terrorism, money laundering and drugs trafficking. In addition, if I believe you will cause serious physical harm to yourself, or another person and I have a legal obligation to report harm or abuse to a minor or vulnerable adult.

What happens in a counselling session?

When you come to a counselling session, you are in control of what we explore and what we discuss. Your counsellor is there to provide you with a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to share your experiences and the issues you are struggling with. They will listen intensely to you, helping you to probe deeper, explore your emotions and make sense of your feelings.

Your counsellor is not there to diagnose or offer advice. They are there to help you gain a fresh perspective on your issues and find your own answers from within to help you cope with your feelings and move forward with your life.

How long should I expect to have to continue counselling?

The length of your treatment will very much depend on your unique circumstances. Your background, your experiences and the challenges you are facing determine how long counselling should continue for. It is up to you to decide when you feel you have reached a new understanding of your issues and you are prepared to face a new and more positive future.

It is best to keep an open mind and not to think about how long counselling should take. As you go through sessions and probe deeper, other issues may come to the fore that require deeper explorations. Stay focused on achieving a new understanding of yourself and your struggles and working towards achieving your full potential.

Why do I need to attend weekly sessions?

Weekly sessions enable you to make gradual and steady progress towards your goals. Each session builds on the last so keeping sessions frequent enables you to progress more quickly. This can also be achieved on a fortnightly basis but any longer may hamper progress.

Does my GP need to refer me for an appointment?

No. You are free to access counselling whenever you feel that you need the extra support. If you feel you need the help of a professional, please get in touch with me.

Will any of my information be shared?

Counsellors have to follow a code of ethics, and confidentiality is at the heart of that code. So no information about you, your background and your experiences will be shared beyond the counselling space. The only exceptions to this rule are if your counsellor thought you were a danger to yourself or others. Also, if your counsellor thought you were about to commit a crime, they have a legal obligation to disclose this to the relevant authorities.
